Description:

Created for Miami Art Week 2024 during Art Basel, and exhibited at Spectrum | Red Dot Miami.

Monumental in scale and intimate in meaning, this Shellphones sculpture stands at the intersection of ocean and music — a tribute to the way sound connects us to place, memory, and emotion.

A pair of giant shells take the place of electronic speakers, reminding us to tune into the melodies of nature. Inspired by the childhood ritual of holding a shell to the ear, the piece transforms that fleeting gesture into an immersive, architectural form. Its silhouette subtly references contemporary headphones, blurring the boundary between natural acoustics and modern listening devices. In doing so, it asks a quiet question: what if our technology didn’t distance us from the land and sea, but tuned us back into them?

The scale is bold and commanding, designed to anchor a room and spark interaction. Guests instinctively step forward, lean in, and engage — creating a shared moment of curiosity and delight. Particularly resonant in coastal residences, oceanfront hospitality spaces, music studios, and cultural venues, Shellphones becomes more than a sculptural statement. It becomes a conversation about sound — about the ocean as the original soundtrack, and about our enduring desire to listen.

Crafted for interior display, this edition pairs expressive form with thoughtful engineering. The shells are carefully articulated and richly detailed, finished in a soft pearlescent surface that echoes the iridescence of natural seashells. The headband is wrapped in high-quality marine-grade vinyl — the same caliber used in boat seating — lending a tactile authenticity to the oversized form. Beneath the surface, solid welded steel and aluminum brackets, cuffs, and internal framework provide structural integrity and long-term durability. Every material is selected to convincingly render the look and feel of real headphones and shells at a macro scale, while ensuring the piece remains robust enough for private collections and even high-traffic public interiors.
